Worms Are Essential To Your Compost
Compost is made by a host of small and microscopic creatures. It is the rich dark result of
the breakdown of plant and organic material. It is the decomposition of plant remains and other once-living materials to release earth beneficial
nutrients. When that same garbage is eaten and digested by a worm it becomes a powerful plant supplement. By using compost to build healthy soil,
people can avoid using garden chemicals that pose hazards to the environment.
Create Right Conditions for Worms
First thing to do to get your compost bins started is put large twigs in the bin.Drill a
hole through the old lid and put a bolt with a wing nut through the center and screw it in. By improving drainage and ventilation, the bin is
able to reach its highest composting power. The worms will move away from the light and burrow into the bedding. They must stay moist and out of
direct heat or light. Worms are very sensitive to light and need an opaque bin that has a lid and keeps the area dark. The worms will move down
away from the light and you can then remove the compost.
Leaves Are Important To Your Compost
Leaves are sometimes the primary compost feedstock available to home compost bins. Leaves
are a valuable resource because they keep garden soil productive. Be sure to turn the materials to the outside or the edges of the bin to the
inside. Grass should be mixed with other materials. It is also acceptable to throw non-meat food waste such as coffee grounds,
vegetables, fruit, eggshells, etc. When that bin is full, you can begin using a second bin. You can buy a commercially-made compost bin with
secure fitted lids which are pest-proof. By improving the fertility of the soil, your plants will grow
better.
Other Compost Making Considerations
By using a little extra straw litter or other bulking agent, you prevent the pile from
compacting. Be sure to bury food scraps in the center of the pile. Spread the ingredients out to the edges and firm down gently. First thing to
be learned is keep it simple. Grass should not be the only material in the compost pile as it often leads to odors. And if you get the hang of
it, you'll have a place for your meat scraps as well.
And if you leave it in a black plastic bag for a year, it will become finer and crumblier.
It is the imbalance introduced by modern farming practices that has created most of the soil problems of today. It is also important because you
are recycling matter that would have ended in a landfill.
