Keep Worms Healthy For A Happy Compost
Bin
Keeping Your Worms Happy
Keep your compost bins running efficiently and
the worms will have a long and happy life. Worms
are sensitive to light and will move to the lower layers
of the bin.To keep the worms from eating their own
castings, which will poison them, make sure the pile is
mixed from time to time. That area must be moved around
periodically and be sure to bury food scraps in the
center of the pile, by using up things that would
normally be thrown away. The worms will leave the older
bedding and migrate to the side where the food is being
added.
Other Considerations
You can buy a compost container in most garden
centers and hardware shops. Grass should be thoroughly
dispersed into a pile with plenty of dry material. Just
be sure to compost thoroughly at a high temperature so
viable plant growths are not passed.
To keep the compost at the proper porosity, add
a little extra straw litter or other bulking agent. If
you deposit ink, be sure the ink is vegetable based or
biodegradable. In some climates and areas without runner
grasses it might have some benefit. The uses of compost
check out “compost information sheet” on
the Waste Online site.
Spread the shrinking organic matter in the
compost bins to fill wall to wall and keep the material
pressed well-down. The compost will improve plant health
and growth giving you bigger crops of fruit, vegetables,
flowers, and herbs. Grass should not be the only material
in the compost pile as it often leads to odors. And if
you have a lot of compost, it can be spread over your
lawn.
Spread the compost on the garden and work it in
with the tiller. It is also a great way to reduce your
environmental footprint by making good use of your
organic waste. To keep the worms from eating their own
castings, which will poison them, make sure the pile is
mixed from time to time. That area must be moved around
periodically. The uses and benefits of the mulch and
compost will be visible in areas planted with shrubs and
flowers. Spread the ingredients out to the edges and
press down gently.
By using them as mulches vegetative, kitchen
food wastes may be composted back into the soil. Spread
the scraps in a thin layer on top of the bedding. Grass
should be added in thin layers so that they do not
compact. Simply place the mixture inside the bin and
check to see if the water and mixture is equally
distributed. It is also important because you are
recycling matter that would have ended in a
landfill.
The compost can then be harvested for the
soil and encourage the growth of plants. Leaves can be
run through a 3 1/2 horse power leaf shredder since
shredded leaves compost much more and added right in the
system quickly.
