Compost Bins Improve Garden Health
Getting Your Compost Bins Going
Compost is made as bacteria starts the process
of decomposition by breaking down organic
waste. You can buy a compost bin
with a base which works perfectly well in backyards.
First thing to do when starting out is to find a place in
your special
garden for your compost bin. Next thing to do to get
your compost started is put large twigs in the bin. In
some climates watering the pile may be necessary. By
using solid sidewalls on our compost bins leaking is
prevented. Spread the material in a thick layer (3-4
inches) on the soil surface from so it will slowly mix
in.
Grass should be added in thin layers so that
they do not compact. Simply place the mixture inside the
bin and check to see if the water and mixture is equally
distributed. Be sure the screen fits tightly against the
can so there are no openings larger than 1/4 inch.
Worms are kept in a bin with
shredded paper or other biodegradable
bedding.Just be sure you do not
remove too many worms when you harvest the compost. And
if you follow these instructions, your worms will have a
long and happy life. Just be sure your bin has a lid to
keep out flies and rodents.
Important Compost Bins Building Tip
They must all meet certain requirements such as:
must be practically odorless. You can buy commercial worm
bins, but it's cheaper and easy to make your own. Drill a
1-inch hole 2-3 inches from the top of
each center support. Just be sure not
to fill it too high with food and bedding, or it will
pack down and possibly become anaerobic. It is the
imbalance introduced by modern farming practices that has
created most of the soil problems of
today.
Using Your Compost On Your Garden
Spread the compost on the weeds to make them
ranker. What remains are very fine particles known as
worm casts that are highly nutritious for plants and
flowers. You can buy one from your local authority or
most garden centers.
When that half becomes full the other half is
filled with bedding and more organic matter. By improving
water penetration and retention and reducing runoff and
evaporation, you are improving your environment. Just be
sure to bury foodwastes toward the middle of the
pile.
The uses and benefits of the compost bins will
be visible in areas planted with shrubs and flowers. The
uses include: nutrient source for the soil organisms and
overall healthy soil. It is also a great boon to your
flowers, foliage, plants, and lawn.
